Assignment Week 2- Personal Ideas

My personal thoughts related to this class:
I am a firm believer that technology emphasis is being too widely used in the classrooms. Students no longer know how to sit, behave and learn. They need to be stimulated 24/7 by pictures, videos, and the teacher. I do not believe that this is good because in life and in the real work and in the working world you will not be stimulated like this. I do believe that technology is important and students do need to know how to use it and teachers can use it in the classroom but, I do not believe that it should be the main form of teaching or learning.

My learning goal:
My goal is to learn how to use more technology that will assist me in the classroom. I also hope to maybe see the point of using so much technology in the classroom through this course.

The problem with too much technology

  1. I really like how you say you want to learn how technology can assist you in the classroom. I think it is important that teachers remember our job is to teach students not just show them fun graphics and videos and hope they pick up something from it. Great point!

  2. I agree with you! People today are so over stimulated by technology, they have lost the ability to sit still and relax. It's a continuous need for something new, something more exciting. Sure, we want to entertain our students and prevent boredom, but we also need to be careful not to feed into this ADD driven society. I LOLed at the picture you posted--very silly, but also relevant. Good job!

  3. Jason F,

To tell you the truth I agree with you and technology is being used too much in the class and I think in your everyday life in general. I think I was a better deriver before navigation came out because I actually knew how to get to places. Now with navigations telling you where to turn you don’t even have to really pay attention. The children now a days have such short attention spans that they cant concentrate in classrooms anymore or at home. Moderation is the key but so many parents use technology as a crutch that, its all the children know. I know I will have to use technology in the class and if you don’t get on board you will be left behind. I wish kids got back to writing with their hands and working on penmanship. Horrible how some of the students write now a days. some is good but more isn’t always better.

  4. THANK YOU JASON FOR THIS REPLY! I really appreciate the long reply and the fact that you understnad what I have written and my point of view. I also wish children would go back to writing with their hands and making their own entertainment and not relying on technology.

  5. I have to agree with what all of you are saying. Not only are students stimulated with enough technology at home, but they are definitely dependent on it to function in a lot of ways. During my student teaching in a living environment classroom, we had to do very basic math at times - but many of our students needed calculators just to add and subtract. In my opinion, most 9th graders shouldn't have to rely on calculators for this! It was one of the clearest examples of how moderation is so desperately needed in schools, because there are going to be times where you just don't have a calculator on hand.

  6. I think the important thing to keep in mind is to remember to differentiate between being technologically literate and tech dependent. The way that I see it, as long as we approach tech literacy can be like learning a new language, it can only afford everyone opportunities otherwise unavailable right?

    1. I do see your point and I agree that there is a difference between being literate and dependent. But, where is the line drawn in the classroom?

  7. It is a very good point you made, that sometimes there can be too much technological stimulation for students. There is no longer much time that students (children and adults alike) spend away from technology. I share your view, yet my iPhone is glued to my side at all times. (except in class, Dr. Chen!!) I agree that there should be a balance between technology and fresh air/old fashioned learning.

  8. First off I love the pics, they are too funny!! Sad part is though I have seen children with cell phones and playing on iPads or laptops that are THEIR OWN! I'm sorry but if I had a child I would not be buying my three year old his/her own iPad just so they can play games on it. I understand technology can be stimulating but at the age of three children need to be running around, having fun, playing with other children and interacting with others to be stimulated. I also totally agree with you on the fact that technology should be in the classroom to ASSIST not to teach, or be the main focus of a lesson, unless it's a technology class of course. I think that this generation has become so dependent on technology that even now a days they have no shame in asking "is there a movie or youtube clip I can watch to better explain this." It's sad because they think learning can be as easy as watching a youtube clip, and they no longer want to put in the work or effort in trying to really learn and understand what they are being taught in the classroom.
